E&O Insurance and Your NPN: New-Agent Setup Essentials

June 19, 2026 · 3 min read · Bridgepoint Insurance Agency

Before a carrier will appoint you, two things almost always need to be in place: E&O insurance and your NPN. They're simple to handle once you know what they are — and missing either is the most common reason contracting stalls.

E&O insurance (errors & omissions)

E&O is professional liability coverage that protects you if a client claims your advice or a mistake cost them money — for example, a coverage gap or an enrollment error. It covers legal defense and certain damages.

  • Why it matters: the vast majority of carriers and IMOs require proof of active E&O before they'll contract you. No E&O, no appointment.
  • What it costs: typically a few hundred dollars a year for an individual life & health agent, depending on limits and lines.
  • How to get it: buy an individual policy from an E&O provider, or join a group/master policy some agencies offer. Keep the certificate handy — you'll upload it during contracting.

Your NPN (National Producer Number)

Your National Producer Number is a unique ID assigned through the NIPR when you're licensed.

  • It's permanent. Your NPN never changes or expires, and it's the same across every state and carrier you work with.
  • You'll use it constantly — on contracting paperwork, certifications, and license renewals.
  • How to find it: look it up free on NIPR.com using your name and date of birth plus your SSN or license number.

Get set up once, reuse everywhere

Smart new agents assemble a "contracting kit" so they can be appointed fast:

  • Active license number(s) and states
  • NPN
  • E&O certificate
  • Background/disclosure details
  • Direct deposit info and a W-9
  • (Medicare) current AHIP and carrier certifications

With that ready, an IMO can submit you to its whole carrier hierarchy at once instead of one carrier at a time.

Don't let small things stall you

The classic delays are no E&O, missing NPN, and incomplete banking/W-9. Handle them up front and contracting goes from weeks to days.

Bridgepoint helps new agents get set up correctly and handles contracting across our carrier hierarchy — so you're appointed and selling fast. Apply to get started.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need E&O insurance to sell insurance?

In practice, yes. Most carriers and IMOs require proof of active errors & omissions coverage before they'll appoint you. It protects you against claims that an error or your advice caused a client financial harm.

How do I find my NPN?

Look it up for free at NIPR.com using your name and date of birth along with your SSN or license number. Your National Producer Number is assigned when you're licensed and stays the same for life.

How much does E&O insurance cost for an agent?

For an individual life & health agent it's typically a few hundred dollars per year, varying with your coverage limits and the lines you sell. Some agencies offer a group policy you can join.
